BBC Media Action is the independent international charity of the BBC which uses media to advance development worldwide. Our mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through innovative use of media. We do this through our focus on health, governance, resilience and humanitarian response. We work in partnerships that include governments, broadcasters, civil society institutions, donor agencies and international Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s). BBC Media Action is largely funded by external grants, including from the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the European Union, UN agencies and charitable foundations.
This is a new role which has been created to lead on the development of major new initiatives and provide support and guidance to in-country teams undertaking business development. You’llnot only support the expanding work of BBC Media Action but will also have a focus on business development for large scale projects globally. Prioritising opportunities in line with regional strategies, you’ll develop and manage relationships with potential partners and handle partner negotiations. Securing future income through your focus on large scale business development opportunities, you’ll lead on writing and budgeting major proposals, drawing on input from regional, advisory, editorial and research teams. Playing a key role in major project design, using contributions from a number of sources, you’ll also work with the Advisory and Policy team to manage relationships with key consortia partners. And as well as developing relationships with potential new partners, you’ll ensure at all times the editorial and operational independence of the BBC and BBC Media Action is protected.
As you would expect in this role, your demonstrable experience of designing and securing multi-million pound projects in the development sector is essential. We need your knowledge of several major bilateral, multilateral donors and/or major foundations and your understanding of how media can be used in international development.
With proven recent and relevant experience with donors at decision making levels, you will also have an understanding of BBC values and ability to apply them in negotiations with partners. We need your high standard of presentation skills, excellent oral and written English, and your strong interpersonal skills. You’ll be able to clearly demonstrate your knowledge of financial and budgetary systems and you’ll also be able to formulate production budgets appropriate to programme ambitions, which fulfil our donor requirements.
