Position Description:
Provides direction, supervision and support to country directors to develop and maintain an integrated and coordinated operating environment enabling FHI 360 to achieve its strategic objectives in public health programs and research. Leads FHI efforts to build and sustain the capacity of FHI 360 offices while promoting the FHI image and key messages. Helps Country Director to identify and access appropriate resources throughout the organization. As the senior representative of FHI in the defined region, meets with potential and existing clients and partners to identify new business and partnership opportunities, monitor client satisfaction and maintain strong relationships. Builds strong relationships with all major organizational entities within FHI to ensure coordination and strong support to field offices. In addition to country support role, administratively leads the regional office based in South Africa.
- Hires and supervises Country Directors within defined region and provides operational and management support to them to effectively manage their programs and research to achieve identified objectives
- Assesses capacity of CD’s and needs of the country offices and coordinates resources to provide needed strengthening
- Orients CD’s to FHI 360’s global strategic objectives and organizational resources
- Orients FHI 360’s US based organizational units to the strategic objectives of the country offices, the resources available in the field and facilitates FHI 360’s strategic growth where applicable.
- Coordinates closely with Global Shared Services, Public Health Programs, Research and External Relations to identify and coordinate, resolve problems, and strengthen systems
- Performs duties related to the management of human resources including analysis of staffing needs and resources, development of position descriptions, recruitment, hiring, mentoring and performance appraisal
- Provides input into the design of FHI 360’s projects and systems for planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting
- Develops and disseminates operational guidance for field offices
- Participates in strategic planning for FHI 360 and helps country offices with strategic planning
- Participates in business development efforts and maintains business relationship in close collaboration with External Relations
- Serves as liaison with other cooperating agencies and partners within the region
- Represents FHI 360 in the region and makes presentations
- Operationally supervises other senior level staff in regional offices and lead regional office management team
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Ensures efficient operation of FHI 360 field offices and affiliates
- Recruits, orients and supervises Country Directors and other select staff
- Represents the fields interests to FHI 360 management
- Service as senior representative of FHI 360 in defined region, identifies new business opportunities and maintains relationships
- Leverages FHI 360 resources throughout the organization to achieve FHI 360 strategic objectives
Proven skills in management, supervision, leadership and networking. Knowledge of FHI 360’s operating environment and all associated systems. Knowledge of FHI 360’s strategic objectives and organizational resources. Diplomacy and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of public health related issues. Sensitivity to cultural differences and understanding of the political and ethical issues surrounding public health issues. Written and verbal communication skills.
Coordination with FHI 360 managers throughout the organization. Constant communication with Country Directors. Close liaison and relationship building with clients, local NGO’s/PVL’s partners, and public/private agencies. Participate in management team meetings and other appropriate forums. Represent organization and group at professional meetings and conferences. Supervisory and budget responsibility. Manages country office staff that involves interviewing, selection, training, establishing performance expectations and conducting performance assessments.
Ability to travel internationally if needed.
Minimum Requirements:
BS/BA and 13-15 years relevant experience with international development programs and includes 7-9 years of supervisory experience, overseas field experience required. Or MS/MA and 11-13 years relevant experience with international development programs and includes 7-9 years of supervisory experience, overseas field experience required. Or PhD/MD and 9-11 years relevant experience with international development programs and includes 7-9 years of supervisory experience, Multi-sectoral experience in the areas of healthcare, economic development, public health, and education. Overseas field experience required.
