Research and Development Specialist Republic of South Sudan
Reporting to: Programme Development Manager Period: June 2012 – Feb 2013 (8 months) Location: Position is based in Torit (with significant periods of work in Juba) FTE: Full time
Overview: The position concerns two research and development projects: DEALs study and Connect.Teaching.
Connect.Teaching is a teaching improvement approach which combines an off-line database of educational resources tailored to teachers in South Sudan, tablet computers, a professional development programme, and an App (software) suitable for multiple devices operational on-line and off-line. Significant research takes place throughout the year in order to understand the value and impact of the project. The DEALs study aims to evaluate the War Child intervention 'I Deal', a psychosocial support training programme for children and young people. The research explores the effects of the intervention on parents and their children, and the overall quality of the approach. Assignment Purpose: To lead the Research and the Communications of two research and development projects (Connect.Teaching, and the DEALs study)
Responsibilities:
(1) to coordinate research activities: recruit, manage, train a team of (freelance) research assistants; arrange all logistics, informing schools and partners of visits; and liaise with the Ministry of General Education and Instruction and other important stakeholders (2) to collect, collate, analyse and report on qualitative data following the structured models in place (3) to produce communications material on a monthly basis to share updates and findings with relevant stakeholders (within War Child and external) (4) to organise events (workshops) to present and discuss data / findings (5) to provide additional support as required
Requirements: • Masters degree (or Bachelor degree with extensive experience) in a relevant field (e.g. education, social sciences, international development, child rights) • Proven skills in leading qualitative research (data collection, analysis, reporting, communicating) • Very good writing and communication skills in English Language (and preferably Arabic / Juba Arabic) • Experience working in locations similar to Eastern Equatoria • Strong people skills in order to work with MoE colleagues, teachers, parents • Strong management skills in order to coordinate a team of research assistants • Good ICT skills
Conditions of employment: A local (rather than international) contract is available. Salary of Euros700-950 per month (dependent on experience). South Sudan nationals are encouraged to apply.
