The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is a worldwide network of judges and lawyers united in affirming international law and rule of law principles that advance human rights.
The Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Project of the International Commission of Jurists is currently seeking an intern beginning July 2012 for a six-month period to work from its International Secretariat in Geneva. The Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Project uses international human rights law to combat violations that are based on individual’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The SOGI Project is involved in advocacy at the UN, in domestic and regional litigation (such as at the European Court of Human Rights and the Inter American Court), training, and publications. Examples of recent projects are on our website.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision and close collaboration with the SOGI Senior Legal Adviser, the SOGI intern will assist in all aspects of the project, including researching, writing, preparing amicus or 3rd party intervener briefs, and attending sessions of the treaty bodies, UPR and Human Rights Council. The tasks generally involve researching case law and legislative developments in a variety of jurisdictions.
In the past, SOGI interns have performed extensive comparative analysis for legal submissions (such as Atala v. Chile or Ladele & McFarlane v. United Kingdom), produced first drafts of memos, statements and briefing papers, and documented discriminatory laws and events (most recently related to freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression).
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidates will be:
• Highly-motivated law student or recent law graduate; • Demonstrated skills in researching cases and legislation and excellent writing ability; • Fluency in English; good knowledge of other languages (Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, German) will be considered an asset;
• Excellent ability to work in a team, according to deadlines and under pressure.
CONDITIONS
Unfortunately the ICJ is not in a position to offer any financial remuneration to interns. All interns are responsible for all expenses and costs incurred in undertaking an internship with the ICJ. On a discretionary basis the ICJ may offer a lunch allowance.
